About Emergency Management

The online encyclopedia Wikipedia defines emergency management, or disaster management, as the discipline of dealing with and avoiding risks. It is a discipline that involves preparing for disaster before it occurs, disaster response, as well as supporting and rebuilding society after natural or human-made disasters have occurred.

In general, emergency management is the continuous process by which individuals, groups, and communities manage hazards in an effort to avoid or ameliorate the impact of disasters resulting from those hazards.

Notices & Safety Messages

Winter Is Just Around the Corner!

Make sure your heating sources are in excellent working condition. If you heat with wood, make sure your chimney or stove pipe is clean.

  • Do not overload electric outlets.
  • Do not run an electric heater on a small-sized wire extension cord.
  • Keep a clean area 2-3 feet around heaters.
  • Do not leave candles burning when they are unattended.

Smoke Detectors

Did you know there are two types of smoke detectors? One is designed for hot fires that produce smoke with high ionization, while another is designed for cooler, smoldering fires that produce a lot of smoke with little or no heat or ionization.

Ninety percent of homes in the United States use only the ionization detector, which may not go off in time to do much good if the fire is the cooler, smoldering type.

Wildfire Survival

It takes a community. You Can Make a Difference!

The Bureau of Land Management Fire Assistance website has information about community assistance available to educate and prepare citizens to live safely where wildland and urban areas meet.

Home Fire Safety

Fires are one of the primary causes of home injuries, and fire hazards exist in nearly every room.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, approximately two-thirds of fire-related home deaths occur because smoke alarms were either not installed or were not working.

  • Install at least one smoke detector outside every bedroom.
  • Install smoke detectors on every level of your home.
  • Check the batteries monthly.
  • Replace the batteries at least once a year.
